Many people have good intentions regarding recycling, but deciphering how to go about it isn’t always easy. That is why Downtown Walnut Creek Ace Hardware will recycle some items for you!
Batteries: Recycling batteries is crucial, as it will prevent toxins from entering our air and water supplies. Batteries can be dropped off in a green bin behind register four. We accept AAA, AA, C, D, Button, and 9 Volt.
Light Bulbs: Fluorescent light bulbs contain a small amount of mercury, which is considered hazardous waste in California. Compact fluorescent bulbs and tubes can be dropped off in a bin in front of aisle nine.
All other light bulbs can be handled at home. LED light bulbs can be put in a bag and placed in your recycling. Any broken bulbs can be thrown in the garbage, though they should be wrapped in paper towels first.
Paint: Paint contains VOCs (volatile organic compounds) and other flammable substances. Disposing of paint safely ensures that those toxins don’t enter local ecosystems. Bring your paint to our paint counter and speak with an associate. Please note that there are a few guidelines for paint recycling. We will only accept five gallons of paint per visit. Paint must be in labeled paint cans and not rusted or leaking.
Our paint recycling storage does have a capacity, meaning there may be times when we cannot accept any paint until the company that recycles it does a pickup. We recommend calling or texting beforehand to confirm that we can take it.
If your paint has hardened, toss it into your trash can at home. Empty spray paint cans can be thrown in the recycling after you have punctured them. Half-empty spray paint canisters should be brought to a hazardous waste disposal.
